We will need volunteers to help
with the house constructions in 2007, 25 min drive from Puerto
Princessa. Details to follow, but you
will have to check into a hotel in Puerto (15$ per night per room
for two).
Houses will be very simple, and for around U$1200
and a ton of enthusiasm a poor family can have a roof over their
heads. See http://www.gawadkalinga.org/
Please note that all ISLAND volunteer positions are filled
until the end of 2007. We will reopen island volunteer intake
in the fall of 2007.

about Palawan at http://www.lakbaypilipinas.com/travel_palawan.html
The
journey from the Puerto Princesa airport is adventure unto itself –
6 hours by jeepney, a bone-jingling, nerve-wrecking rollercoaster
ride. It is possible to
be picked up by our own truck, (better suspension and only 3.5 hours
travel time) but we
travel to town only once a week and you must coordinate your travel
plans with our schedule. The turtle sanctuary is 23
km away from the main shore and you will have to travel by
boat.
There are not
many mosquitoes on the island but it is different in the
jungle where you will be the main dinner course,
and there are still malaria cases in Palawan.
There are certain precautions you must take when traveling
through the jungle by jeepney. Ask before you
travel!
The accommodations are primitive but we do have clean water
(cool only) and a really great swimming beach. Food is simple and
cheap. 5$ a day will
not buy you a steak or wine, but we promise you won’t be
hungry. When you are
thirsty, all you have to do is to climb a 50 foot coconut palm… just
kidding, we will do it for you .
In your
free time you can chose from snorkeling, jungle trekking, mountain
climbing, or simply relaxing on the beach. Sounds like a great
adventure? You bet it
is. Learn more about available positions:
